Children from middle income homes have, on average, 13 books per child. Conversely, it is estimated that there is only 1 book for every 300 children in low income neighborhoods and up to 61% of these families do not have any books for their kids at home. The Little Free Library movement wants to promote literacy and education among children and their families. As such, LFL movement looks for creative and innovative ways to engage kids to be more into reading.

The purpose of the project is to reconnect Buffalo citizens with their city, its cultural landmarks and neighborhoods. The design of our proposed Little Free Library is inspired by the concept of the treasure hunt. 10 library pieces would be scattered all over the city adjacent to city’s tourist attractions and districts. Each library piece would have same structure but different faces, a playful and fun shape connected to its location. Together all the ten pieces would be a part of a greater idea.

Children and their parents would be encouraged to visit different libraries in different locations. As such, Little Free Library project would not only promote literacy and education, but also would make kids active, help to rediscover city, connect with one’s family and empower neighborhoods.

The structure of the bookcase itself is the same for every library. However, the library faces are different to compliment the uniqueness of the site. Their faces are made out of MDF board; cut and engraved with the CNC router respecting the design modularity. To optimize the remaining materials, the unused MDF will go towards the assembly of shelving and structure support. The rest of the budget would be spent on waterproof painting, the plexiglass door and additional features.
